Highly Overrated But Still Good
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
Well-done horror film with a slight twist on the genre. A good cast and pre-century setting make the film more credible. The film is interesting in the sense it plays like a 'who-done-it' mystery instead of a straight-forward horror. The editing is great, and I loved the music, photography and eerie atmosphere, as well. There never really is a dull moment, and has a great twist ending.
This film begins promisingly enough with a werewolf wreaking havoc, but after that it kind of loses its way. Fast forward a quarter of a century and another - or perhaps the same - creature is decimating a small town in nowheresville Europe, or perhaps it is USA, whatever, this is an extremely powerful creature, not your run-of-the-mill "eras lupus", but happily a regular band of werewolf hunters happens to be passing through. There is a fair amount of gore in this film, and a confusing dream sequence, but much of the action occurs in the dark, there is though a surprising twist or three towards the end. If you can understand the last one, best write your own review.
This is certainly a watchable genre horror movie for wolfy fans. Nothing new here really and certainly been done before but it looks OK, passingly authentic with no notable major flaws I could place. Nothing really stands out with the exception of Stephen Rea in the cast a Golden Globe and Bafta nominee with an extensive acting career and resumé - he kind of adds a bit of gravitas to the scenes (you may have seen him last with vampires in underworld awakening although his resumé is quite something else). I think the makers certainly intended to make a good movie and its a decent enough watch, I was pleasantly surprised. Brain into neutral and enjoy some old fashioned movie watching.
I am a big fan of this genre but was greatly disappointed with this movie. First of all the acting by every person in the film is high school level amateur at best. I didn't think the special effects were as bad as some of the other reviewers said (I've seen far worse) but there were a couple scenes where I almost started laughing (which I'm guessing is not the desired reaction the director was going for). There are two twists or surprises in the film, one of which is very predictable, the other just plain stupid and out of place. Yet another movie from Netflix that I took a chance on and find myself wanting my 90 minutes back. If you're stoned or drunk or just have no taste at all this is a good film to kill some time and get in a few laughs.
