For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
Did you people see the same film I saw?
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
As far as formulaic romcoms go, this one bears little resemblance to the rest. True, like other Hollywood romcoms it features strikingly gorgeous actors who might make you yell at the screen "oh boo hoo! How could anyone who looks like you have any problems in life?!?" But aside from that minor flaw, it's a very human story with a powerful, realistic message about love & living outside the social norm.I'm not an expert on Aspberger's syndrome--my only knowledge coming from movies like "Temple Grandin", "Phoebe in Wonderland" and now "Adam"--so I won't try to tell you if Hugh Dancy's portrayal was accurate. But I can say that he was genuine, convincing and endearing (or at least as endearing as you can be while playing the role of someone who doesn't really display emotions). What I really liked about this film was the subtle allusions to the children's book "The Little Prince" (original French "Le Petit Prince", if you remember being forced to read that in 10th grade foreign language). In that regard, it weaves 3 themes of childhood, astronomy and love together and provides a very satisfying story. This film has been described with a lot of clichés that may lead you to expect certain things, but don't be fooled. The story is as unpredictable as the audience's reaction. (Aside: don't you hate it when critics use the words "feel-good" & "heartwarming", or alternately "bittersweet" & "heartbreaking"? DON'T TELL ME HOW I'M SUPPOSED TO FEEL, DAMMIT!!) All I'll say is, if you like your movies slightly off the beaten path, then this is a good one for you to check out. Other great anti-romcoms include "Forget Paris" with Billy Crystal & Debra Winger, "Pumpkin" with Christina Ricci, and the much-maligned gem "All About Steve" with Sandra Bullock.
a special film. for art to escape from many traps. for science to present a complicated problem in few lines. for impressive Hugh Dancy in a beautiful role. for atmosphere and questions and fragile way to discover the other. a love story by a not ordinary recipes. a drawing as gentle letter. a character behind Asperger syndrome because it is more than pledge for tolerance or moralistic manifesto, more than a beautiful tale or show about crisis. it is occasion for reflection. out of definitions, out of formula of looser versus winner or Charming Prince. in this case , Little Prince is more important. because it is picture of solitude. personal worlds, a father who is not expected idol, a mother for who sacrifice is foundation of marriage but , in same measure, life lesson for future of her daughter, a young woman for who truth is essential in existence and Adam who is himself. that is all. at first sight. just a beginning. the rest is hidden in viewer.
Spoiler Alert. The movie is well written until the last 1/4. It becomes predictable and unoriginal, it neglects to take the movie as far as it should go almost as a means of protecting the hearts of the audience. For the movie to receive a rating higher than a 6 and be deemed a classic, Adam has to die. If he did the movie would be on par with other screenplay masterpieces, but because he doesn't it becomes nothing more than just another decent movie. Don't get me wrong the movie was enjoyable, but the ending just left me slightly upset that Mayer wasn't capable of fully weaving greatness into the conclusion. I recommend the movie, but just don't get your hopes up to be amazed by the ending, because it will let you down.
It started off very well, has firm grip on story. As a geek you like to see the movie,a typical boy who is intelligent but suffering from Asperger syndrome and fell in love with his neighbor. You kinda like this story which drew my attention to watch this movie. I had very high expectation from this movie, it plotted character very well initially but as movie progressed it lack proper storyline. You feel like movie is running running and suddenly stopped. There is no up and down, you will not feel any thrill or emotion after watching this. They could make this movie better by putting more emotions or romance. Girl fall in love with a men who is suffering from Asperger syndrome and without much interaction she fall in love; that's hard to accept. but overall you can still watch it.
