Surprisingly incoherent and boring
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Babylon AD is... oh why do I even bother? This movie f***** sucks. It is the usual "escort the significant whatever from point A to point B while battling a bunch of evil $#!+$" garbage'and it executed poorly. The only good thing about this AIDS infested ass is the.... you know what, I completely forgot because I was too busy cutting myself to alleviate the pain of sheer malicious boredom. Ugh. Anyways, the concept, the story, the pacing, acting, everything was Hollywood cliche in the most retarded manner. I rather blow a gorilla than watch this poo poo pee pee ca ca weiny movie again.
In the near future, mercenary Toorop (Vin Diesel) is hired by Russian mobster Gorsky (Gérard Depardieu) to smuggle Aurora (Mélanie Thierry) from an isolated convent to New York City in six days. They are joined by her guardian Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh). Noelite High Priestess (Charlotte Rampling) eagerly waits for their arrival. Toorop finds his old friend Finn (Mark Strong) to help smuggle them into America. It's a slightly different dystopia. It holds some promise but director Mathieu Kassovitz lacks the visual confidence to bring it to life. The action is manic without the thrills. The bigger problem is the lack of tension. Despite lots of action, the story is rather bland. I never care about any of the characters or their journey. The three international leads don't have chemistry together. The dialog isn't anything to write home about either. It could use some good jokes and somebody funny to deliver them. Something confusing happens in the second half which loses any chance I have with this movie. This is a waste.
First off, i rate this movie 10/10 because i chose not to over-analyze it; not that that's a bad idea. This movie DOES lack some major plot points that would help us understand the story, some of the acting is fairly average, and sometimes the movie is boring. However, as an action/sci-fi, the movie has some very interesting action sequences and cool technology. It shows a world that could potentially happen, both technologically and economically. This is NOT a movie to watch and then have a deep thoughtful discussion about. It's simply a movie to enjoy for all action, sci fi, and grim-dark fans to watch. 10/10 because a) i love vin diesel, and b) an entertaining and interesting movie to watch and think about.
Vin Diesel isn't a good actor to me. Unless he's doing nothing but kicking ass, I can't appreciate what he says. I'm not interested in him, really. This movie only made a fourth of what it cost, and it shows. Very few of the scenes were enjoyable. It dragged on and on, and it didn't even bother with a resolution. Sister Rebeka was a nice surprise though, since not many women got speaking roles in this movie.I understand that there were lots of production issues during filming, and that's to be expected. But when you put your values before the values of the person directing, it's time for you to step down from your position. I would have liked to see what Kassovitz wanted the movie to be.
