Memorable, crazy movie
Excellent but underrated film
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
I Don't Know How She Does It (2011): Dir: Douglas McGrath / Cast: Sarah Jessica Parker, Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Munn, Kelsey Grammar: Utterly boring and cheap romantic comedy that addresses the balancing of family and work. Sarah Jessica Parker plays a working mother who lands a big corporate deal that will have her away from home a lot. Greg Kinnear plays her equally successful husband who is supportive but understandably irritated when her cell phone becomes her life. Director Douglas McGrath makes a good attempt at presenting these themes but the screenplay works like a sleeping pill with its predictable drivel and dumb clichés. Parker holds her own as a cheerful woman wading through the stresses of work and dealing with a son who does not speak and a pouting daughter. The other characters hold very little weight next to Parker's charm. Kinnear is a fine actor but his frustrated husband role has been exhausted to death by many other actors and he can only go by the numbers. Pierce Brosnan as Parker's career contact whom she accompanies to land a deal, is the flat and obvious suitor whom Parker thankfully responds with correct payoff. Olivia Munn plays Parker's assistant who dislikes the idea of motherhood and prefers a relationship without the stress. So when she does get pregnant it is met with complete phony bullshit where we are suppose to sigh. Finally we have Kelsey Grammar in a role that will likely have him wishing for Fraser again. Despite its message regarding working mothers, the only sighing I did is when the concluding credits rolled. Score: 3 ½ / 10
I knew the leading actress and one of the leading actors of this film, I didn't know the exact reason for the title, but I knew it wasn't rated very well by the critics, nevertheless I was still up for seeing what it would be like for myself. Basically in Boston, Kate Reddy (Razzie nominated Sarah Jessica Parker) is a hardworking investment fund manager and finance executive, with a "between jobs" architect husband Richard (Greg Kinnear) and two children, she is ultimately the breadwinner of the family. Many of her friends, work colleagues and family say to her "I don't know how you do it", as she only just manages to control both her working life and home life, but her workload is about to increase when she accepts a business career opportunity with New York broker Jack Abelhammer (Pierce Brosnan). Kate is having to travel back and forth for various meetings with business clients, and answering a flurry of emails from Jack, and this means chaos elsewhere, as she misses school appointments and becomes distant from husband Richard, but don't worry, in the end Kate realises what she is doing and puts her family first. Also starring Olivia Munn as Momo Hahn, Seth Meyers as Chris Bunce, Kelsey Grammar as Clark Cooper, Christina Hendricks as Allison Henderson and Jane Curtin as Marla Reddy. I agree Parker does slightly overdo the ditsy personality and is a bit annoying being the career woman, Brosnan does his usual charming guy role reasonably well, and Kinnear could have had a bit more screen time as the slightly unappreciated husband, to be honest, the only bit I found relatively funny was the lead female trying to concentrate whilst scratching with an infestation of lice in her hair, apart from that I hardly found it funny at all, it's not a film I'd recommend or watch again, it is a dull comedy. Adequate!
Vacuous, and an insult to all actual working wives and mothers. How on earth did this nothingness cost so much to produce, and just why was it ever released? It fails miserably on all criteria. Why has the movie industry lost the ability to understand the difference between 'A NAME' and 'ACTUAL TALENT'? The rest of the world still knows the difference, hence the slating this movie has received. So sad to think of all the wonderful, raw, blossoming talent rotting in the gutter. Surely time for the movie industry to grow up, open it's doors and make full use of all those that it has left out in the cold - and to stop insulting us, as the paying public, with garbage like this.Emma.
Why has this movie gotten such a bad rap ? True, it's no great flick and far from a classic, but considering what's out nowadays, I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT isn't all that bad. Some good comedy bits, some nice acting and film making make this pretty good. Much more true to life than these action, special effects films with all that fast cutting and editing. At least the camera stays still and no jerkiness of hand held cameras which is so prevalent these days. Story of mother and carrer woman is logical, problems and all. SARAH JESSICA PARKER seems to be on everyones hate list. WHY? Long face and all she turns in a remarkable performance and is great at physical comedy as well. Give the gal a break. The speaking to the camera and narration sides with SEX AND THE CITY and could have been left out. Otherise an enjoyable hour and a half that won't kill anyone. Speaking of killing, no one gets killed, maimed, hurt or otherwise brutalized in this one. So refreshing. Oh, and no foul language and nudity. Nice for a change.
