Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
A different way of telling a story
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
I've watched this movie out of desperation, as I've found nothing better I haven't seen before. While it starts off boring, slowly it starts to get better, still fails to redeem itself. It was released in 2005, and I suspect it did not age well. There have been better thrillers about similar things - even before (like The Butterfly Effect or Frequency). The main problem is that this movie is not smart, the main character does nothing to change his own fate (which he inadvertently does just to make the movie more cliché), and does not even think about what is happening. I did not feel challenged to think, there were no surprises or brilliant ideas that the genre would demand.Adrien Brody does some very poor one-sided acting here and there, which I assume is fan service. The supporting actors are much more interesting, and deliver layered performances. The music, script and directing, meh, all mediocre. The special effects are not bad for the time, but they serve no real purpose. This could have been so much more if it dares to be philosophically challenging.
this is one of those movies where the direction of it has you clueless. I definitely liked it, and its alternative otherworldly interventions seem to be the end result of this story. What I mean is, there are two different things happening for a veteran of the Desert Storm. We see adrien brody either die or have flashbacks about five or six times...a lot of the film consists of his life within a mental hospital. This is the first time and only time I have seen exclamation and a different kind of passion in the acting and characterization that Daniel Craig plays.Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kris Kristofferson and Brad Renfro....plus kiera knightly all have parts in the movie. The ending of it totally rewinds to Christmas Eve making the sad lifestyle and grumpy mood Kiera had UNREAL.
The Jacket is an extremely underrated thriller that went mostly overlooked, or was met with lukewarm reviews back in 2005. It's ripe for a revisit, and deserves many. It's moody, disconnected (in the best possible way), sketchy and cold, but at the same time injected with a vital emotional pulse, carried by the ensemble cast's wonderful work, as well as the poignant, exciting screenplay. Adrien Brody magnificently underplays that role of Jack Starks, a psychologically damaged gulf war vet thrown headlong into a web of confusion, violence and time travel following a mysterious incident he has no memory of. The spine chilling, scintillating story takes its time unfolding, with each new reality bending revelation more exciting than the last, and some truly memorable and unique touches that really make it a special film, Jennifer Jason Leigh is outstanding in a supporting role, as is a young Daniel Craig, before he got self conscious and started limiting himself in disappointing roles. The filmmakers give the proceedings a bleak yet hopeful, eerie and downbeat yet oddly exciting, quaint aura, and it's a film that sticks in your memory and your dreams. Highly recommended.
being that some of my favourite movies are Donnie darko ,open your eyes , the butterfly effect and the machinist and also a fan of Psychological and especially time travel movies (back to the future my favourite movies ever ) I decided I check this movie out .I watched it twice in a couple of days and the second time I appreciated more the time travel concept and I found it Extremely enjoyable and more important that it makes sense .ok some faults you will find (Jennifer Jason leigh hasn't aged a year and looks more beautiful in 2007)but if you look deeply in every movie some sort of fault you will find even in the greatest masterpieces. if you love Psychological/time travel/mystery movies you must check this one out .
