Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
Such a frustrating disappointment
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
The idea was the real reason I wanted to watch this film. Sadly it's the only good thing about this tripe. It's really unfunny. Most of the jokes involve peeing, farting, anal probing and slapstick. And the whole joke of the aliens thinking that the human can turn them into zombies is not funny. It's just an ugly film to look at. I hate the colours and the design. Jessica Biel's character is given nothing to do except be the girlfriend and that's it. There isn't much to her character. Justin Long plays the same sarcastic guy you've seen in every comedy movie he was in. Hey, Gary Oldman is the villain......... again. Poor Gaz. Why did he do this film? He was probably kidnapped like the rest of the actors.John Cleese is just in it for the money and The Rock...... sorry, Dwayne Johnson still can't act.The sci-fi references got on my nerves. How many times do we have to see Star Wars get referenced over and over?Do yourself a favour and rent the kids a Pixar or a Dreamworks film instead.
I have always loved animation, whether it's cartoons(Looney Tunes and Silly Symphonies), films or TV shows. Planet 51 is not a bad movie, but at the end of the day it felt rather bland. I've seen worse certainly, but I can also think of better out there. The animation is wonderful though, very rich in colour and detail. The soundtrack is memorable, there are a few funny moments that will have children chuckling, fun set pieces and a couple of Cold War pastiches that will keep adults interested, Rover is a great character and by far the best character of the movie and it all begins very promisingly. The voice cast are full of great actors, especially Gary Oldman and John Cleese, and Planet 51 generally uses them well, Dwayne Johnson is an especially likable lead. However, the story, despite its great premise, is rather weak and unoriginal in structure and after a promising twenty minutes it is never quite as interesting. I liked the Cold War pastiches, but some of the other references were verging on tired. Among the funny moments, there is the overall mediocrity of the script, with a lot of clichéd dialogue. The characters are weak and stereotypical, with one of the blandest villains I've seen in an animated film recently, and the ending is very predictable. In conclusion, looks great but at the end of the day it felt very bland and forgettable. 6/10 Bethany Cox
At least one major critic said that "Planet 51" was a one-joke movie, and I agree with that statement. Though the movie tries to reverse things by changing around the roles, it otherwise plays like movies about aliens visiting earth. The movie does try hard to have a sense of humor about the situation, but I didn't laugh, except for the part of the movie where a cover of "Greased Lighting" plays with sanitized lyrics. Another fault I found with the movie were the characters were pretty thin and one-note. As for the visual look of the movie, the art design and the animation is serviceable, but is notably missing the polish found in Pixar and other big budget Hollywood computer animated movies. Still, I feel that (young) kids may find the juvenile feel of the movie appealing, and will not feel that they've seen it all before somewhere, because they probably haven't. However, they won't understand the references to other (and better) science fiction movies.
Planet 51 is yet another animated movie that works well for almost anyone, not only the kids. Planet 51 is a mostly cute movie about an alien society that are very alike our fifties, or how the fifties looks like in the movies. Their greatest horror is aliens, and trouble arise when a human astronaut lands on the planet.Spoof is the key word of the movie. Most of all it is a spoof of the entire fifties, and the invading alien genre that evolved in that decade. But Planet 51 also spoofs, and that is one of the things, alike the Pixar movies, that is best about Planet 51. It's own jokes are not quite as good as entertaining as its spoofs, but a few stand out. Especially the character Rover and his tricks are hilarious. Without his antics Planet 51 would be average at best, but with him it is quite good.Planet 51 is a cute and entertaining animated movie, perhaps best to watch with young kids. But adults will find it entertaining as well.6/10
