It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
I didn't check reviews before watching this film. Glad I didn't. It's much better than the 5.3 rating IMDb lists. Surprisingly good, actually. The beginning of the film had me wondering if it was going to be a dud, but it soon took off into a pretty good thriller/horror film. The plot kind of winds you along in a great way. You have that uneasy feeling where you want to tell the people 'I don't think I'd be doing that if I was in your shoes!'. Which, I guess means they succeeded at having you care about the characters. The story was quite creepy and well done. Much of the bloody stuff that could have easily been overdone wasn't; it was done just right. There was enough, but not too much. Most of the creepy factor grows in your own mind as the tale unwinds. I think this is another area where this film succeeds very well; like the great movies of old, it shows you enough but also leaves enough to your imagination to make it much scarier. My husband likes scary movies, but I really hate 'slasher flicks' and prefer psychological thrillers, so finding one that works for both us is challenging sometimes. This one scored high for both of us. Much better than the IMDb rating leads you to think. Don't let the rating, or the first 15 minutes fool you!
Crashing in the Brazilian jungle, a group of tourists stranded in the jungle finds their helpful guide part of an illegal group harvesting organs on the black market and tries to get away before becoming the next participants.Overall this was a pretty disappointing effort without too many positive points. What really hurts this one is the fact that there's just nothing happening here for such a long period of time that it's really troubling for the most part. While it's nice to have the crash that strands the group being so early in here, there's still a ton of time spent here waiting around trying to decide to do something, followed up by a rather lengthy hike through the jungle where all they do is simply complain about the backwards customs in the country or try to strike up a relationship with each other that really becomes quite tedious as this goes along, and with the rather extended amount of time partying the first half is really just so bland and uninteresting that even while providing some nice eye-candy and setting up the mystery nothing much happens. The treks through the jungle are even more tedious of seeing everyone marching along in single file line through the admittedly lush jungles in a seemingly endless series of legs trudging along while every minute is taken up with the gang arguing with each other or complaining about the trip, and this causes the film to be so long and boring for the first hour here. Frankly, none of this is even remotely horror- related and causes this to take until the hour mark until it goes for horror, and that's not in the slightest bit interesting to take this long to get interesting. That is where the film really gets going as the slowly-dawning mystery being built in the first half gets paid off nicely here in the compound in a pretty brutal and graphic surgery scene to remove the one victims' organs which is easily the highlight here for the uneasiness it features as well as the cruelty for which it gives in the rationale for everything here. Even better is the escape here with the nice manner of how they get away as well as the generally enjoyable chases through the jungle using the native habitat and some rather clever tactics to help get away including a fantastic suspense scene of utilizing the secret underwater cave-system to get to safety. However, even that has problems, running for far too long by repeating useless scenes of everyone continually popping up for air and being so dark to being with the suspense is long gone by the time this finally resolves itself in a cliché, unconvincing manner. It's part of the reason for why this one is knocked down as much as it is.Rated R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence and Nudity.
This is my first review here after may be 400 movies i rated. I give this film a go because despite a not so good rating, i always check 3 or 4 reviews, which for THIS movie were balanced between Good with valuable points, and very bad with poor explanations. If you are into credible story, don't even try to see this movie. Despite a pretty good acting , and a interesting main subject, the characters are so dumb i was just face palming every 5 minutes after the first hour. And during this first hour, nothing really happen. This is so long before any action takes place, and this is so predictable, that i was just hoping the main characters will die in awful suffering scenes.I can't understand why people compare this movie to hostel, because despite the fact that there are tourists captured in both, the atmosphere is just TOTALLY different. No thrill, no suspense, no breath taking. Just a wait to see them die ALL for such dumbness.I actually enjoy a lot of genre, from comedy to thriller, horror etc... but this one is just bad in every of them.
Alex and his sister Bea, and her friend Amy meet other travellers and become friends after an accident with their bus. They follow a track through the woods and find a hidden paradise. They decide to stay in the place drinking with the locals and they meet Brazilian teenager Kiko. They are drugged and when they wake up, they are practically naked, with all their belongings, clothes, money, jewels, passports, backpacks stolen. They walk to a small village trying to find a police station, they get into trouble with the dwellers and they are helped by their acquaintance Kiko, who leads them to his uncle's isolated well-equipped cabin in the woods to wait for the next bus two days later. At night, Kiko's "uncle" arrives with his friends and the group discloses the sinister intentions of the newcomers.....Released at the same time as Hostel, and during the reign of 'Saw', this is one of those movies that got ignored by the public, due to bad press and the act that most people thought it would be another torture porn movie. There are violent scenes, but its so much more than a torture porn movie. For a start, the characters really are believable, and you do care for one or two of them, and also a few grate on you.Desmond Askew is particular irritating, especially if you are from his side of the world. He is a typical cockney wide boy, and it irks me to think that film makers as still typecasting us Brits as this awful parody. It loss a few points for this, but otherwise, it's a solid movie, with really beautiful locations, and a swimming scene hat is pure Oceana to the eyes.Ignore the fax that it's classed as torture porn and enjoy it for what it is, a film about the dangers of travelling and straying off the path.
