Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
Jason Bateman is one of my favorites in comedy genre ( Horrible Bosses , This Is Where I leave You , Extract , Game Night , Date night etc ) and Melissa McCarthy can be funny ( The Heat , Spy ) but this movie has nothing to do with comedy or fun . NOT recommended .
There are many parts of this film that could be seen as social commentary; the ease of identity theft, the lack of care and downright ridiculous behaviour of the police, the attitudes to different levels of crime, and consequences for actions. Yet if you treat it as a goofy romp, then there are some laughs along the way. It just gets let down by Diana (Melissa McCarthy) trying to be both an evil genius, while stopping short of being evil, resulting in her coming across as irritating. And Diana isn't even her real name.Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) is a penny watching accountant who pays plenty of attention at work, but has his life unravel when he gives away too much information to a con artist, meaning he has to take the law into his own hands to get his life back. As with other McCarthy films, she's the street smart one who points out what the straight, more educated, characters faults are, and along the way, they get to know each other better. In the end he uses some of her tricks to get through and she learns from him to redeem herself. Along the way they're chased by other criminals who she's sold fake IDs too, and a Skiptracer, played by Robert Patrick (in an almost parody of his T1000 role from Terminator 2).The plot and script are contrived - so instead of Sandy simply saying "she's bad, and here's why", he skates around the issue and ends up looking like the bad guy - yet it could have actually benefited from borrowing more from other movies, such as, you know early on that Sandy has a horrible boss (Jon Favreau), who is going to get some comeuppance, it's just a question of how and what happens, and frankly, could have been worse. It's crude, without being overly evil.
**** May contain strong spoilers ****This is a review made by StoneDraim... and that means that if you want to read a probably different kind of review, keep reading....This is my personal experience, my personal point of view/perspective and my personal opinion... and my opinion is just one of like 7 billions in this world.Starting off like a typical naive comedy that thrust on every aspect of prejudice and preconceptions. Sandy Bigelow Patterson (Jason Bateman) is filling the role very good and is solid in his performance. It is really sad that the actress MElissa McCarthy has been settled in a box with only similar roles, attending the high preconceptions on a big lady with extreme low self esteem. At the end of the beginning of the movie I was surprised in a really good way. Mr. Patterson, his new boss Daniel Casey (John Cho) and the detective Reilly (Morris Chestnut) is having a discussion about the identity theft. Instead of playing along with other movies and following the typical script (that have been written SOOO many times), the script is suddenly taken a way that is close to reality. A little trust from the boss, a little approval from the police officers. It could have gone in the direction where "all is chaos and a mish mash off misunderstandings and so on"... and it takes the other road to close up to reality. Great and fresh! And...behold; some minutes later it strolls right into the formulaic road trip movie show. Seen it before.I adore Jason Bateman as an actor. I love his subtle easy going and balanced person in his characters. He could have been directed better in this one. Jason can deliver world class if pushed. I got to love him with the movie "Moving Target" (look it up).Over to the movie as a product: - The production : Normal American standard speaking of the entire production. - The actors : Melissa McCarthy is giving some emotional scenes which gives her more than "good work" as a rate; she has something great going on there. Jason Bateman and the rest of the cast is giving the story an ordinary performance. - The story : Could have been much better... a lot better. They had something good as a foundation, and then let it slip through their hands. - Entertainment : Some good moments and pleasure. Most of the time plain and simple "oh, they do this and that again... seen it a lot before". - Age : 115,8 out of 10. (The final rate is based most on my own entertainment of the movie. Short elucidation of the rating: 6 Nice production. Good movie. 5 Approved.)
I expected this to be pretty bad as i hadn't seen a lot of good reviews for it, I don't really understand why... Fair enough it wasn't hilarious and the best comedy moments were probably in the trailer but this film is so much more than a comedy. It had so much heart and at the end i even got teary. The friendship that i saw developing was very heartwarming and even though Diana/Melissa started off as a terrible person responsible for potentially destroying Sandy's life, i felt so sorry for her when i found out she was filling her life with meaningless possessions just to fill her empty life. I enjoyed everyone's performances in this movie especially Melissa's. So don't just listen to the negative reviews that are around and give this film a fair chance, i certainly don't regret it.
