Strong and Moving!
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
In Baltimore, there is a big girl who dreams to take part in Corny Collin's Show and dance with a nice guy, Link. The girl's name is Tracy. One day she finds an audition of the TV S\shoe, therefore she manages to ask her mother who is not willing to accept it to allow her to join the audition. However she fails because the judge does not like hoe big body. She is depressed and late for classes because of the audition. She has to stay at school as the punishment, then she meets a great black dancer, Seaweed. He invites her to a dance party and there, she is scouted for the new cast in Cony Collin's Show by the representative. After that, she faces a lot of troubles, discrimination, and she fight for the resolution. The great thing of this film is that it has not only a funny scenes but also an important theme, that is, abolition of discrimination about not only color but also appearance. In this film, there are two contrastive characters. One is Tracy, who is a fat girl but has a sense of equality. The other is Amber, who is a beautiful but has an evil mind. These two character emphasize this theme effectively. I love musicals so much and I love this film, too. Especially, when depressed, this film is the best recommendation.
Well-intentioned but clumsy.Hair Spray has some great ideals and intentions. Set in the 1950s it deals with racism and intolerance. Surely this is a basis for something profound.Unfortunately, no, not really. What follows is fairly predictable and unoriginal. if it was made in he 1950s it would have been quite revolutionary, but by now the topic has been explored a lot, and in much better detail. The fact that it is a musical detracts from the topic, making it feel light, rather than serious and gritty. The music itself is mostly quite dull, and seems to rely largely on existing 50s music with new lyrics (and the new lyrics don't do the old songs much justice). The main novelty of the movie is John Travolta acting as a woman. Unfortunately, ultimately that's all it is - a novelty. His performance feels clumsy and forced. A decent female actress would have done a better job.Remaining performances, from an all-star cast - Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Jerry Stiller, are good though.
Hairspray was an uplifting movie with ideas of acceptance of others. The main character, Tracy Turnblad fights throughout the movie about how she thinks black people should be treated equally on television. This reflects the ideas of the civil rights movement and the peaceful protests used during that time period. In addition, Tracy is a character throughout the movie that represents the need for acceptance because of her weight. The dancers on television are not accepting of her because of her weight and she proves them wrong. The movie is entertaining with its music and humor. A character that stands out is the mother, played by John Travolta. He takes on a female part as a larger woman and Tracy's mother. The character brings comic relief to the movie. The theme of the movie is serious, but there is also an idea of hope and acceptance of others in the future.
Hairspray is based on a Broadway musical of the same name that starred Rikki Lake and tells the tale of a young girl named Tracey(played by newcomer Nikki Blonsky)who lives in Baltimore with her parents(played by Christopher Walken and John Travolta(yup im really not kidding here but John was done up in drag as a woman in this movie crazy right).Tracey dreams of starring in the Corny Collins show which is hosted by Corny Collins(played by the lovely James Marsden)and drags her BFF(best friend forever) played by Amanda Bynes to help her get on the show. But of course there is competition with Michelle Pfeiffer and Brittany Snow's characters who would do anything but to be in the Corny Collins show and ruin Tracey's dream to star with Corny Collins and a hunky guy called Link (played by High School Musical star Zac Efron who looks like a young Elvis Presley I must say in this movie). So will Tracey's dreams of starring in the Corny Collins show come true and can she help Queen Latifah's charcther a spot at the Corny Collins show too?Bottom line is this, its a feel good musical to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon with some catchy songs (that will have you humming or not)and a great supporting cast from John Travolta as Edna (in drag),Nikki Blonsky,Zac Efron,James Marsden,Amanda Bynes and co. SO do I like it sure its a good flick, its not the best film in the world but I enjoyed myself watching it.Overall its a 7/10
