It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.
Don't Believe the Hype
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
This review contains spoilers.127 Hours is a movie directed by Danny Boyle and stars James Franco. The movie is about a hiker that becomes trapped for 127 hours and must come to terms with his predicament. The movie examines his life and how he had come to this situation. In particular it shows the character's regrets and his eventual resolution. The movie is a vehicle for James Franco's acting ability. The movie is entirely dependent on James Franco's acting range and for this the movie does well. There is not a scene that is weak because of James Franco. He is on the screen for almost the entire movie, and the movie is better because of it. He is able to portray a character literally stuck between a rock and a hard place incredibly well. I became a fan of James Franco and his acting has made me interested in his serious roles in the future. The movie's plot is bare bones. This is to be expected but the movie fills the full 90 minutes with flashbacks and hallucinations. These scenes felt superfluous to the predicament and only served to make the character come to terms with what he had to do. Without these scenes, the movie could have been 45 minutes long.Overall, I would recommend 127 Hours. It is a tense and claustrophobic look into a man stuck in a rough predicament.
This is not an action packed movie and it was never aiming for that. It is a film that shows you, how just one misstep can trap you when you are alone in nature. A thrilling ride of emotions await those who think they can handle this movie. Definetely not for everyone, especially when realizing that this is based on true events and not fiction anymore. James Franco plays his role absolutely convincing and there are moments that will send shivers down your spine!
Spoiler warningWith a lot of good reviews on this site and Metacritic you would surely expect a really good film. I thought i would love this since i really liked Castaway and other Boyle's films like Slumdog Millionaire (which i gave a 10/10)Never heard of Aron Ralston before but the ending is predictable, i knew what will happen from the moment he picked up the knife. They present Aron Ralston to an unlikable character at least to me.As positives the struggles of Aron are presented realistically (a bit exaggerated obviously) The best scenes are the hallucination scenes like the one where it shows his route to his car with a bottle of Gatorade.
This is a well - known story where a superman mentality proved to be super strong in the end. With little medical knowledge he used instincts, logic and his limited equipment to get out of impossible situation and survive. For his independence, self-sufficiency and his ignorance and naiveté he paid a high price. There can never be enough inspirational stories of bravery. I recommend, the movie delivered great acting, cinematography and realism although I had to skip the butchery part.
