Boring
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
They're here and they want us! You don't get much story wise from this but the acting is reasonable and cinematography is sound, could've done without the extra scene explaning all at the end, I'm not that stupid
It was one of the long due film, despite releasing just 4 years ago. Those who saw it said me not to miss it. But they also warned me it was a common horror theme with a slight change in the storyline. Since horror is the least average rated genre in my collection, I was not expecting it to be a masterpiece. That could be another reason why I liked it. Yeah, the same old blueprint horror flick, even though it was not as bad as what some people are saying. Except the opening quote reveals most of the film's twist. And the twist at the end was not actually a twist if a person knew it before.A small family struggling with finances, lately witnessing some strange events in the house. But once it takes a serious turn, now they must find a solution for it, or else the unity might fall apart. After getting some idea of everything happening, they meet an expert and gain some important inputs. Now their fightback begins, the challenge they are about to face going to decide the future of the family. Their plan and its execution, the remaining film is to tell us what happens to them. The JK Simmon's role was one of the most overused roles is horror films. I did not like that, but I liked his appearance. It is also an open end if this film gets a sequel. Like usual when a family struggling, people around them going blind were a cliché. Yeah, I know horror films can't get out of such thing. It's very rare to see a film out of these platforms. Yet it was an okay film, if you prefer a decent entertainment over an experimental film, which is not guaranteed entertainment. But usually it is an enjoyable flick by most of the people. Despite familiarity, one would have a nice time with it.7/10
RELEASED IN 2013 and directed/written by Scott Stewart, "Dark Skies" chronicles increasingly strange events at the Barrett residence in Suburbia, USA. The parents (Josh Hamilton & Keri Russell) slowly come to believe that the cause of the havoc might be extraterrestrial. J.K. Simmons plays a solemn expert on the subject with whom the couple seek advice. This is an amalgam of "Poltergeist" (1982), "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977), "Signs" (2002), "The Forgotten" (2004) and "Night Skies" (2007). It's as good or better than the best of 'em and is significantly more compelling than "Signs," which is a decent movie but "Signs" is actually about something other than alien visitation (see my review for evidence).Critics say the movie's "too slow," but I never got this impression. I found the steady build-up engaging with several effectively creepy or scary moments. This is the opposite of lame horror flicks like "The Hollow" (2015) where the filmmakers overdo it with amped-up horror clichés every three minutes to hold the attention of viewers with ADHD. Russell is competent and attractive, but looks like she needs to gain about 20-25 lbs.THE MOVIE RUNS 97 minutes and was shot in Santa Clarita, California, with additional work done in NYC.GRADE: B+/A-
I love invasion films and I thought this movie was fantastic. Both Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton were great as the stressed out parents who go from worrying about financial problems to fighting for their kids' lives. I think the film makers did a really good job balancing the emotional aspects of the Barret family's struggles with the creepy factor. They had just the right amount of both to create a well- rounded atmosphere of angst and fear. Enough emotion to allow the audience to be able to relate to the protagonists, but not so much that it becomes a drama with an alien invasion in the background. I particularly loved the scene with J.K. Simmons as the resigned alien expert who's had more than his fair share of harassment from our galactic visitors. I thought that was an important turning point since films depicting an alien invasion usually tend to portray humans as somehow being their equal, when in reality, that probably wouldn't be the case. Simmons portrayed a man who was beyond tired and who knows the hopelessness of the situation. The last half hour gets a little confusing, but after watching it a couple of times, I think I finally figured out what's actually happening. Unfortunately, there's no happy ending here which makes the concept of an invasion a little more realistic in this film and I found that refreshing, if not heartbreaking. It's not a flash-boom-bang kind of invasion movie like Independence Day. In a way, that makes the concept a little more frightening. For these aliens, we are lab rats. Guinea pigs for their experiments, whether it's for their own scientific gain, or because they get some sort of sick pleasure from it. We never know why, just like the animals we experiment on will never know why. We find out the hard way that we are not at the top of the food chain, so to speak.
