An Exercise In Nonsense
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
This is not so much a comedy as a traumatic set of events in New York among people who are living on the fringe of the middle class, a radio talk show anchorman and a videotape-shop woman. Some traumatic event brings the anchorman to a strange phase in his life. One of the people he got on his last radio show got an answer that was a little bit rough and he committed suicide. The anchorman gets depressed and runs into some totally off-limits neighborhood and he gets in touch with some street people, homeless people. And that's how he meets Parry, a deranged history professor who has been, since the day his wife was shot dead by a mass killer who entered the restaurant where they were having some dinner, haunted by historical fantasies about some Red Knight who is after him to kill himWe are dealing here with insanity as a way to live in some fantasy world and at the same time to be able to cope with the dramatic dimension of this fantasy world by escaping the traumatic real world. He is systematically chased and hunted by that red knight made of fire and then he can only run away, and away, and eventually back to his safe zone, his refuge in an underground boiler room in an off-limits zone. The film is cruel about the way these people are treated. As long as they are not dangerous to other people or to themselves they are abandoned in the streets. When they turn dangerous they are dealt with, by the police if they endanger someone else, or some psychiatric institution if they only endanger themselves or if they turn catatonic. Don't expect any humanity in such institutions. The people there are just kept alive as long as they can be kept alive, and at some point along the road, they might be nicely accompanied into the other side of the living border. Jack, the anchorman, suddenly feels some kind of call and behaves as if he had a mission concerning this Parry. So, with the help of his girlfriend, he gets him out of his underworld and little by little makes him wash, eat, drink, dress properly and Jack discovers that Parry has been observing the city and has noticed a woman who works in some bank or financial institution of some sort. She is a solitary woman, in fact, a woman who is extremely afraid of other people. So Parry's attraction is the fact he feels on her side the same solitude as on his side. Jack and his girlfriend will be the intercessors and they will, the four of them end up in a Chinese restaurant. Quite a strange adventure. Parry then takes The young woman, Sandra back to her place but he does not go upstairs as she suggests, not this time, maybe next time, though he is hard and as big as Florida. Alone then on the street, the Red Knight arrives and starts chasing him and of course, he runs away to his security zone, his off-limits area but he is dressed for going out, for a date in a restaurant and he is thus attacked by local hooligans who do not like the rich. He ends up catatonic in some institution for sick and helpless homeless people. That's when the film takes a turn for the more surprising and I won't reveal it. Jack plays the insane game of Parry to try and get him back. That's when this social tragedy turns into a comedy in no way social at all. The end is just plainly funny-strange and of course absolutely unrealistic in any way. Entertaining in its last fourth after three fourths that were quite educational.Dr. Jacques COULARDEAU
Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) is a radio station broadcaster who likes to make light of his viewers dilemmas. However, one listener takes Jack's questionable advice a little too seriously and ends up killing himself. Upon hearing of this news, Jack goes off the rails and over a 3 year period he becomes a shadow of his former self spiralling into alcoholism and depression. After being rescued by vigilante cum megalomaniac Parry (Robin Williams) Jack forms a strong bond with Parry (more so when he realises that he had a role in altering Parry's life as well...) From the start this is a tough sell, you have a hard-nosed radio DJ whom seemingly enjoys revelling in his viewers misery (although in fairness his comments are meant in jest meaning that Jack is never entirely unsympathetic). His friendship with Parry felt natural and believable; in the early stages Jack felt compelled to help Parry out of a sense of guilt, but in the later stages of the film I felt that Jack helped Parry because he wanted to - this is more evident in the bit where Jack decides to play cupid and ensure that Parry gets a date with the girl of his dreams. I think the interesting thing with this film is that both men end up on similar paths; both men are living normal happy existences at one point in their lives, but this changes for both men following a tragic incident in their lives. The journey that they undertake together is funny and touching and this is all helped by wonderful performances from Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams. The latter is particularly good and it's nice to see Williams showcase his talents in a film with a strong script that actually compliments his talents. Terry Gilliam is on directorial duties here and although he is known for some of his films being a little wacky in The Fisher King he does play things out more or less pretty straight - there is some wackiness with Williams character, but this is understandable within the context of the story and to be fair it isn't overdone here. Simply put this is a fabulous film and one that you really owe it to yourself to watch.
A former radio DJ named Jack (Jeff Bridges), suicidally despondent because of a terrible mistake he made, finds redemption in helping a deranged homeless man (Robin Williams) who was an unwitting victim of that mistake.I have been aware of this film a long time, though I never really knew what it was about. With Jeff Bridges and Terry Gilliam, it was more or less guaranteed to be good. And sure enough, it takes what could be a sappy romance and makes it something much, much more. One has to talk about the Red Knight. Although he does not show until two-thirds of the way into the film, this is when you know it is a Gilliam movie. The imagery and oddness really fit the man's vision.
The Fisherking At school we watched a movie in class. It was the movie "The Fisherking". It is a movie about jack who becomes very good friends with an sort of homeless guy parry. Jack feels guilty for the lost of parry wife. And to feel less guilty jack helps parry in his search for the holy grail. The Fisherking is a movie based on the story of the knight parzival. It is a part of the parzival story brought in a nowadays jacket. In the beginning of the movie I thought it was a little bit slow and boring but a little later in the movie it became very nice and not boring at all. The role of jack is played by Jeff Bridges. The role of Parry is played by the great actor Robin Williams, who sadly past away in 2014. Robin Williams plays the roll of parry perfect. In the movie he really becomes parry. But also Jeff bridges plays the role of jack very good. The Fisherking is a mix of drama with also a lot of humor. It is a very good movie with a real strong and good story. I highly recommend this movie. That's why my rating for this movie is an 8 out of 10.
