I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Movie is clearly made for TV. I don't know if that's true or not but it seems like some Hallmark middle of the day in the week type stuff. It's the true story of some dumb kids going around robbing celebrities. They are all super unlikable and cringe inducing. Like they're just having a blast in these celebs houses and recording videos and such. How would you not get caught? The cops got onto them after a bit and they still were out being dumb. In a movie you try to put yourself in their shoes and it's just crazy how dumb they were especially if that's how the actual events went down. Oh and I really hated the dialogue.
I had to give The Bling Ring a re-watch since I was on the Sofia Coppola binge. I remember not being overly fond of this film when I first saw it and thinking it was her weakest work. Fresh eyes and all I'm more positive about the film although I think the message of the film isn't exactly clear nor is it a film without some issues. Still there are plenty of things about this film that I really enjoyed. It did remind me of something that you would see from Harmony Korine like Kids or Spring Breakers, however much more presentable. The film follows the real life events of a bunch of young kids in California who robbed items from the homes of famous celebrities. They are a group of fame obsessed teens who broke into houses and tracked down when celebs when they weren't home. They were eventually caught for their crimes and served various sentences. Its a wonder why Sofia Coppola decided to present this story as a film but I think I'm more lenient to it now than I was back then. Its a good film although it feels slightly underdeveloped as a project. The first thing to notice is how shallow the characters are. You won't be identifying with them or even feeling sorry for them. I don't think they were meant to be developed very well, the intention may have been to have vacuous privileged kids at the center. We don't really know why they do what they do, they just might be bored. One thing that I noticed is that Sofia Coppola doesn't really go any deeper to exploring the story. The events are laid out as they happened but there's no real condemning or attempting to identify with the characters. Its just a straightforward presentation of the popular events. That's not to say that this film isn't good though. Coppola masters beautiful shots of streets and houses in Hollywood. Its got a youth driven loud soundtrack which compliments the scenes and characters well. Its still a very nice looking film although there may be a longing for more in this film. I will say this though, Emma Watson is very good in this. Who would have thought Hermione Granger can completely become a prototypical snotty girl who is obsessed with getting her social brand out there. Its wonderful to see her disappear into that role really naturally.7/10
The Bling Ring follows a group of young women (and some random guy) as they realize how easy it is to sneak into celebrity's homes and steal stuff, so that's what they do. On occasion the movie managed to pull off some decent directing. There were a few takes that were of a decent length, and I think that somewhere in this mess of a film was a good director somehow held back. The rest of the movie is complete trash. I absolutely hated every minute of this film. By the 9-minute mark I was done. Yes, I even checked to see how quick it was. Thankfully, it was only 90 minutes long. My breaking point for this movie came as soon as I realized how bad of an actor that Israel Broussard is, which is, like I said, at the 9-minute mark. He was just awful, reading his lines with so little of anything that it just made it hard to watch. And even without him, the other acting was super mediocre. Most of these actresses seemed to have been hired for their looks and not their abilities, because most of them were made slightly more tolerable by how pretty they were. But even then, their characters were so unlikable that they kind of ceased to even be pretty and instead looked stuck-up and frustrating, thus creating a downward spiral for all of them. Bad characters. Moving on to the editing. Most of the time I don't even notice film editing, but here it's so blatantly bad. There's nothing special about it, so it only adds fuel to the garbage fire of a film that this already is. The writing is just awful. The dialogue is boring and uninteresting, but moreover the presentation of the story is so incredibly redundant. It's just a detailed montage of the same scenes over and over. They go to a house, steal stuff while complaining about clothes and saying 'oh my gosh, chill out' in the most frustratingly white girl-ish way possible, then get drunk and high and dance at parties to bad music, and occasionally go home. There's nothing interesting happening, there's no interesting characters or plot, and it just sucks. And it's not even like there's a level of suspense as to whether these characters are going to get caught. Of course they get caught, they're a bunch of idiot teens whom we've seen in security footage multiple times throughout it. There's another redundant bit, security footage shots. We see it over and over again. "We get it, the girls were caught on camera." Overall The Bling Ring is awful. I ended up taking a 20 minute break towards the end simply because of how boring and uninteresting it was, then later regretting that break as I realized that I could've been done the movie sooner than when I had actually finished it. It's just so poorly written, poorly acted, and repetitive. I actually like some of these actors, but these were roles made for nobody. Nobody should have played these characters, because that would've meant that this movie would've never been made. In the end I wouldn't hesitate to recommend that you burn this one, or at the very least spare yourself the trouble of seeing it.
The bling ring is a 2013 drama film starring Leslie Mann and Emma Watson. Based on a true story, this tells a story of a few girls and one boy who go into celebrity's homes and steal there clothes, make up and all of that other ya know...stuff. Based on a true story known as The Bling Ring, this film is one of my favorites because it's very real and good and it tells a very good story of teenagers these days. This film was based on a article called 'The Suspects who were Loubitons' written by Nancy Jo. The film was received fresh from rotten tomatoes. The bling ring is a very very good modern film that shows teenagers now a days. Also,I loved Taissa Farmiga(AHS,6 years, the final girls) in this so so so much!! Loved this film!!
