Why so much hype?
Save your money for something good and enjoyable
It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
I don't understand what people that this was funny...........drug abuse? drunken sex? etc etc etc.......frankly speaking this movie was a time waste event. See black was in this i thinking " WOW it must be great" its was trashy sex movie that seem to include the buzz of trans gender theme.........crappy and a worthless watch movie. I believe that trans-gender is a wonderful thing, but Hollywood is now junking up the movies with this concept Robin Williams is yet another trashy version of this type of movie..totally lost in the making and thinking people are stupid enough to buy into anything with top actors and actress in them...........YUCK!
Wow! I mean WOW this movie was so heavy handed with it's agenda it nearly broken my head off of my shoulders. Yes, we get it, Hollywood hates family values almost as much as it hates the TRUMP administration, almost! Hey if you want to make a pro bisexual, pro early teen promiscuity stinker, that's your business Mr Hollywood director, but why disguise it as a happy go lucky family comedy? To Jack Black you beautiful, talented bastard, if Hollywood told you that it would be really cool to go chop off your unit and live life as a woman because, well heck all the kids are doing it, would you do it? I'll never look at your work the same now so....thanks for that. That's really all I can say about this piece of excrement. If you want to be grossed out while waiting desperately for something actually funny to show up that never really arrives, by all mans watch this film.
An unexpected surprise....in some ways the material was too good for Jack Black (he just doesn't possess the emotional nuance needed for a role like this)...but several of the cast were A+...the film deals with some very hefty themes with deft and wit....and can only be faulted for glibness at times, particularly the ending. Nonetheless, this is destined to become a classic in time....despite it's failings, it earns a place in the "Marty" pantheon of human dramas. PS; for those who can't do Jack Black, his performance here is actually pretty good.
My first viewing of this film had some scenes marred by digital glitches, but I saw enough to want to see it again, without the glitches. It was even better the second time, with a crucial line of Dan's now revealed. But I'm getting ahead of myself. This film is actually very funny, just watching Dan go about the details of his life in exacting precision. (Note how he moves an olive atop the crudité tray for a better visual presentation.) The way Dan's personality bounces off the many supporting characters is just amazing: some mock him, some abide him, and very few actually like him. Even his wife chastises him at the dinner table with a sharp "Dan" when he tells his 14-year old son that a popular girl asked him out just to humiliate him. I could probably evaluate each and every scene in depth over the interplay of the characters. Well done, writer/directors and actors. This movie has deeply felt and spot-on performances from every single actor. The dialog that I missed the fist time around was a particularly poignant remark that Dan makes to Oliver: that his appearance at the high school reunion will be something they will remember for the rest of their pathetic lives. Substitute "my" for "their" and this scene says it all.I have to say I hated the last 10-minutes of the film. But I can't let that ruin what I really enjoyed about it.
