This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

We've seen this plot over and over again (see Dances with Wolves, Avatar, Ferngully, etc.) and this one does it worst than a lot of them. Similar to Ferngully, this is a cartoon movie with an overt message of acceptance of something that is helpless against us. While this is an important message, it is done very poorly. The jokes in this one all fall flat, the voice acting is poor, the animation is C-average, and the plot is boring and will make you sleepy. The director really had an opportunity to do some fun things with space and size distortion from an ant's perspective but we really don't get enough scenes regarding this. The kite-surfing was really the only fun one that comes to my mind. Besides this, the other ones don't really capture your attention. Skip this one.

Anyway, I saw this movie's trailer while I was watching another DVD. It looked really funny with the sound of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and some reference to Harry Potter. I thought that it might be similar to "Shrek" with lots of funny references to our daily lives. So I waited several weeks to finally check it out from my local library. I have to say that the trailer is totally not what this movie is all about. The story is not very funny, it is really intended for children. Even though it is watchable for adults, but you can save the time to watch some other good movies. I kept watching, hoping that they will show that funny moment which they showed in the trailer. It is a lie, what they showed in the trailer has nothing to do with this movie at all. I think that this is the first time that I have ever seen a trailer that doesn't have any scenes from the actual movie. The ants don't look adorable with their sharp angles. And here is another thing, why do those ants have blue eyes? Have you ever seen an ant with blue eyes in real life? Even ants have to be Caucasian now? And how often do you see evil cartoon characters with blue or green eyes in any animated movies? That is just wrong, what would those children think when they see blue eyed ants or any other animals? I surely hope that those animators will stop doing that in the future.

Just like all the critics declared, this is the most inoffensive animation of a good crop. It's a little reduced if compared with the excellent "Happy Feet", for example, but still funny because of three characters: the crazy grandmother (Lily Tomlin voice), the optimist larva and the adventurer ant Fugax (Bruce Campbell). The story pass moral lesson by the history of Lucas(Zach Tyler), little boy that discharge your frustrations inundating a ant hill. But the ants reduce him to face him. When that happen, Lucas is delivered to a tutor (Julia Roberts, almost professional in dubbing) that teach him how to live in the ant's philosophy. Well-animated, this movie doesn't have much thing to give. But, if you really relax, you will have fun and, sometimes, this is only what matters.

What can I say? I liked this movie. Sure, the ant-based animation has reached its limit, I think, but there's always room for another one if the film itself is any good. Ant Bully works on a number of levels. It has the bright colours and action that will keep small kids happy and also enough adult in jokes and humour to satisfy watching parents. The voice cast is just about as good as you could hope for... Nicolas Cage, Paul Giamatti to name but a couple. Even Meryl Streep for goodness sake! But for me the highlight of the movie was Bruce Campbell's character, Fugax. Brucey fans will have no trouble watching this film, whether with their kids or alone. He totally steals the show as the slightly crazed but good-hearted scout ant.Sure, there have been lots of ant movies over the last few years, certainly enough to be sick of them. It seems like the movie industry works to death any theme that seems to do well.....rather like they are doing with penguin themed animations now. But Ant Bully still succeeds where others fail for simple reason that it is fun. There are a couple of things parents might want to be ready for when watching with very young children. There's a scene where a small bug gets incinerated by a beam of sunlight, for instance. Also the wasps in the film are about ten times the size of the ants and have no cutesy anthropomorphic features to make them appear less sinister than they come across in the film. Likewise, although the movie has a strong message against bullying I wonder how many kids will go home and find an ants nest to pour water down. But, on the whole, thoroughly enjoyable entertainment that should have done better than it did at the box office.
