Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
David Lynch's Mulholland Drive is a unique movie. Unique because regardless of what you consider- if you liked the film or not- you will think about what you just saw. It is a reactionary film in ways because it toys with your perception. Naomi Watts arrives in Los Angeles as a wide-eyed starlet who finds a mysterious woman, shaken and damaged in her apartment. With her career not going as desired she teams with this woman to solve the mystery of who she really is and how did she come to be in that situation. This is a psychological film with multiple layers and themes which might confuse you. Lynch is an auteur and all his films reek of atmosphere and this one is no different. You should try Mulholland Drive- I enjoyed it and will see it many times in time to come.
David Lynch is the sort of filmmaker that approaches his movies with no nonsense; everything he puts into them is important and he wants you (the audience) to know that right from the start (with the exception of Dune). Mulholland Dr. has kept people guessing as to what the film is actually about, and what the hell the events on screen actually mean. Is this a dream, the vision of a crazed woman seeking Hollywood glamour and glory, a metaphor on studio executives abusing their power affecting the lives of EVERYONE around them, or could this all be a twisted spiritual sequel to Sunset Boulevard?Whatever you make of Mulholland Dr., there's no disputing that it's a memorably confronting neo-noir classic that's been dissected and assessed ever since it came out in 2001, and it's sure to keep raising questions instead of answering them like a regular movie would. Mulholland Dr. is not a mainstream movie; it's a film that famously transformed a failed television-pilot into a feature film, and this transformation actually benefited the struggling actress story-line that Lynch was going for in the first place. And Mulholland Dr. is a surprisingly strong LGBT movie that deserves to be seen by more of the modern LGBT community. This is a great film noir and an example of Lynch's skill in making celluloid dreams stay with you long after you've seen the movie through to the end. 5/5 stars.
'Mulholland Drive' is effortlessly one of the best films of the 21st century. Genius director David Lynch takes his audience head first into a surreal, neo-noir world full of complex characters, nightmarish imagery and amazing soundtrack (everything you'd expect from Lynch) and after the credits close you feel like you have just woken up from a dream that is both terrifying and beautiful. Naomi Watts delivers one of the most unforgettable performances in film history and captivates the audience in every scene she is in, while being backed up from wonderful performances by Laura Harring and Justin Theroux. Angelo Badalamenti's haunting score greatly contributes to the atmosphere of the film, as well as several stand out songs such as "Sixteen Reasons" by Connie Stevens and "Llorando" by Rebekah Del Rio. While mainstream audiences may be put off by the slow-moving plot line and many unanswered questions, 'Mulholland Drive' offers a compelling and thought-provoking storyline for those who dare.
Mulholland Drive is a unique mystery movie directed by David Lynch. The movie is incredibly hypnotic with much of the visual contributing to a dream-like state. This is a positive in the movie's favor as it adds to the themes and setting of the movie. I highly recommend this movie to any audience looking for something different.
