Nice effects though.
A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
This had a better than average cast and a not so bad script.Jerry O'Connell has a deadline to decide if he is going to marry his girlfriend of 5 years or not. While she is away in New York establishing her career, he decides to see if dating anyone else will help him sort out his feelings. On the plus side, the movie doesn't follow all the clichés we would expect. There is a laugh-out-loud segment early on when Jerry O'Connell tells his friends a secret that we think is going to reveal his sentimental side, but goes in a different direction. There is a reoccurring theme about knowing oneself, which several characters are trying to do, but those subplots don't exactly end up where we expect either. This movie doesn't exactly get crude or crass, but it's not a sappy chick flick, either. Which means that it is pleasant enough for a couple to agree on for their next movie night, but that neither one is going to love it so much that they have to go out and buy it afterwards.
"Buying the Cow" is an extremely well written, highly quotable, overlooked gem of a comedy. Ron Livingston, Ryan Reynolds, and everyone involved must have had a blast making this. If you enjoy the way "Swingers" exposes male insecurities, "Buying the Cow" is your movie. This is definitely one of the best comedies that no one has ever heard of. After you see "Buying the Cow", you will likely be telling your friends, both male and female, that you have discovered comedy gold. The DVD has minimal extras, but with mega-multiple viewing value you won't care. Run, don't walk and rent "Buying the Cow", you will love it. - MERK
This movie is my favorite. It has so many truths and is hilarious. I recommend to any guy. It helps explain relationships. It also faces everyday problems with dating and finding the one. A must see for anyone between the ages of 20 - 40. Has some great characters kind of like Tomcats. The guy from Office Space, and others. If you like comedies you will love this movie. THere are a lot of one liners too that are very funny. Ryan Renolds is great too. I like how they explain dating problems and finding "the one". THe movie flows very well especially when Ryan thinks he is gay!lol and the flashbacks at the airport.
There's nothing new to be found in BUYING THE COW, but it is a rather enjoyable little romantic comedy, even with the formulaic and predictable plot. Ryan Reynolds has the movie's best role as the leading man's best friend, a player who starts to believe he's gay when he wakes up in a man's apartment. Although the whole thing can be seen as rather anti-gay, it's still rather funny.BUYING THE COW stars Jerry O'Connell in the leading man role, and he's less interesting then those around him. Jerry's character is attempting to find his soulmate, and sees a mysterious woman who keeps appearing in his life, only to disappear mysteriously, as the ultimate catch. Not at all bad. Mildly funny, but not offensive. Good enough for a day with nothing to do.5 out of 10(go to www.nixflix.com for a more detailed review of this movie and reviews of other genre and Indie films)
