Absolutely brilliant
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
This is a really outstanding film. Steve Carell's is Dodge, as he attempts to cope with the impending apocalypse by embarking on a road trip with an off-kilter neighbor (Keira Knightley's Penny). The director Scafaria has infused the early part of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World with a comically (yet appropriately downbeat) vibe that's reflected in Dodge's encounters with various supporting characters (Rob Corddry's hedonistic Warren, Melanie Lynskey's sweet yet simpleminded Karen, etc), with the meandering atmosphere affording the early part of the proceedings the feel of a low-key character study. A rather funny part of the film is when Dodge and Penny stumble into a restaurant populated by drugged-out waiters and patrons, encounter a house full of survivalists, are arrested by an unreasonably rigid police officer, etc, etc. Some is good, some is just OK. There reaches a very specific point, however, at which Seeking a Friend for the End of the World finally morphs into the affecting drama promised by the setup, and the movie subsequently becomes more and more engrossing in the build-up to its emotionally-wrenching finale - with the irresistibly romantic bent of Dodge and Penny's relationship ensuring that the film, in the end, makes a far more pronounced impact on the viewer than one might have reasonably expected.I must admit I am a fan of both Carell and Knightly. Both bring a great deal of earnest sincerity, and talent to their performances, as well as humor and sensitivity. They carry the film.
I thought this was going to be poor especially with that title but it was better than expected, (there are some quite cruel reviews out there for this movie) no special effects here it's mainly about two people coming to terms with the fact they face a cataclysmic end in a few weeks and they look back at the relationships/marriage that they have had and how it could have panned out differently if they had taken a different course. Its now free on Amazon Prime and being stuck at home after an operation this helped while away one afternoon. NOTE!! this could be a SPOILER this is a quote from the Goofs "The announcer on the TV at the end says that the asteroid Matilda is arriving one week earlier to Earth than expected. If this were the case, then due to the trajectory of an asteroid and the velocity at which the planet moves in orbit, the two would no longer collide with that great of a mistake in timing unless either there was a mass conspiracy to lie about the timing of the asteroid or for some reason the planet stopped moving in orbit for some undetermined reason." So this could have been the opportunity to have SAFFTEOTW2 but as it didn't do so well there is only the one movie.
I LOVED this movie. There's a good amount of surrealism to it, with some rather (intentionally) bizarre parts, but it absolutely works and only adds to the film. At its core, this movie is about love and human relationships and how life's meaning is derived from them. It's very funny and clever, but at the same time very poignant and moving. The ending really got me and stayed with me for weeks after I saw it. Keira Knightley and Steve Carell are both fantastic, and there are some excellent bit roles played by Patton Oswalt, Rob Corddry, and Martin Sheen. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Please do yourself a favor and see this movie. It will make you laugh, think, and maybe even cry a bit.
An asteroid is about to destroy the Earth and humanity as a whole only has three weeks left. Put yourself in those shoes and imagine what you'd do with your few days left. Some would resort to trying all those vices they have previously avoided for being too damaging, amoral or probably both. Some would pull in, treasuring their remaining moments with their loved ones. And some would still go to work, pay their bills and pretend like nothing is happening. One such soul is Dodge (Steve Carell), whose wife promptly abandoned him as soon as the news hit the world and whose friends are constantly trying to entice him into trying drugs or having sex with their other friends. But Dodge simply wants to be left alone and live out the rest of his days with dignity. Then he finds a girl (Keira Knightley) sobbing outside his window. This movie is at its heart of a love story. Two lost souls find each other in the midst of turmoil. But it's the outlandish nature of that turmoil that give this movie its purpose and character. The end of the world paints the whole situation in an unique colour and provides many situations you'd never expect to see in a romcom. And it provokes you into thinking what you'd do in a situation where you only had three weeks to live. Sure, that happens to people everyday with diseases and such, but what if everyone else was on the same boat as well. That changes things and the movie does a credible job of exploring the different possibilities, while still remaining light-hearted enough at its core.I liked this film. The script is clever and witty, the main pair of actors pull off the characters beautifully and it's just an enjoyable experience overall. Recommended for all moviegoers equally.
