I'll tell you why so serious
Blistering performances.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
This film is known as The Red Mark of Madness, Blood Brides and An Axe for the Honeymoon - it's a pretty good movie that will leave you guessing about a few things in the end. After watching the film, I read a handful of reviews and discussions on the film and there are a couple of takes on what actually happened - both of which I was thinking of when I was watching it. Two ideas on the ghost: 1) The ghost of the dead wife was real. She really did appear to others and later on him.2) The ghost of the dead wife was all in his mind - including others seeing and speaking of the (dead) wife. In other words, he imagined others taking about seeing her, he imagined the coffee being poured for his dead wife and he imagined the wife's sherry on the table. All was in his mind. The murders must have been real and not imagined by John. Overall a good thriller I enjoyed watching. 8.5/10
Exceptionally handsome fashion designer Stephen Forsyth (as Jonathan "John" Harrington) specializes in bridal gowns. He also has a compulsion to kill his beautiful models by slicing them with a meat cleaver. We know about the killing from the opening, as Mr. Forsyth's narration explains his proclivities. He may not know why, but it becomes fairly obvious. There is some unintentional confusion, however, in the casting of Guido Barlocci as Mr. Forsyth's character at a younger age; because they look nothing alike, you initially wonder what connection the blond boy has to Forsyth's psyche. The script in this Italian-made film is nothing special, but it's dubbed well, at times. Directed and photographed by Mario Bava, style is heightened over substance. The best scenes involve Forsyth and Mildred, his shrewish wife played by Laura Betti.Il rosso segno della follia (6/2/70) Mario Bava ~ Stephen Forsyth, Dagmar Lassander, Laura Betti, Jesus Puente
This movie really isn't the greatest one around but it surely is an entertaining one, which still makes this movie perfectly watchable.Guess that this movie is a Giallo but it's different than usual. Although the movie is basically shot as a Giallo, it's story is quite different from what you would expect and takes some different approaches with its genre. Not necessarily great ones but it nevertheless still makes the movie somewhat original. It's certainly quite a creative movie, that takes some odd angles and approaches at times. Still it's a perfectly accessible movie really, so don't let some of the odd sequences scare you off.It certainly isn't the movie tense movie due, which is mostly due to its different approach. Unlike other Giallo movies, in this movie we know from the first sequence on who is the killer. All that the movie tries to answer is why does he kill off young girls, who are about to get married. This is were the movie its twists are supposedly are supposed to come from but there really isn't that much mystery or tension present in this movie though. That doesn't mean that the movie isn't taking some unexpected but also yet unlikely approaches with its story. The movie also isn't anything gory really, which will probably disappoint a lot of genre fans. Despite the killings in this movie, there isn't anything shocking to see in this one.Still the movie at all times remains perfectly watchable due to its pleasant style and pace. The movie is a really entertaining one, that compensates itself for its obvious and apparent more weaker points.7/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
Mario Bava was quite possible the best filmmaker for doing something quick and cheap. Sometimes to great effect(Kill Baby Kill, Rabid Dogs) & bad(Dr. Goldfoot & the Girl Bombs). Fotunately, there are a lot more good than bad. This one however, is probably his greatest achievement, maybe not his greatest movie though. It gets better each time you watch it. Where the 1st time was maybe a 6 now its a 9. There is just so much attention to detail in it. It Plays out more like a black comedy than an actual slasher film. The story is predictable, about a psychopath who must keep on killing brides to find out who killed his own mother, but the story is not really that important what is is Bava's use of a camera. Its all over the place here. Great stuff.
