good back-story, and good acting
Absolutely the worst movie.
It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
I didn't know what to expect when I decided to watch this on a flight home but I am glad I did. I know the feeling having served and coming back into civilian life. It wasn't easy. As I watched, I felt every emotion the soldiers felt. I have had what they portrayed. I have asked my wife to see it as there things that are hard to say when one has PTSD. This movie shows not what happens to just American Soldiers but Soldiers around the world. If you don't know anybody in any Armed Forces you may not get this movie; cause you won't appreciate it. If you do, it's an insight to our struggles and governments lack of resource for funding to help those who have served to give a Democracy the freedom and protection people think is free.
Adam Schumann (Miles Teller) rushes to carry Michael Emory to safety. Time passes and his enlistment ends. Similarly, Sautolo Aeiti (Beulah Koale) and Billy Waller (Joe Cole), Adam's military comrades, serve their tour of duty. On the tarmac, Amanda Doster (Amy Schumer) questions Adam about her husband's death. Vague with his response, Adam eats at a diner with his wife Saskia (Haley Bennett) and two children. Additionally, Aeiti learns that his wife is expecting and Waller's fiancee has moved on. Loneliness haunts their lives as they agonize over painful war memories, but along the way some characters find a path to hope and reconciliation. The first thirty minutes is all set-up to events for the characters to pursue their goals; but after that, this film takes an uncompromising and tough stance on battling PTSD. The best segments in the film come when characters discuss the problems with their suffering (Adam talks with Emory and Amanda) and the problems they face finding treatment for their PTSD (the doctor telling him thousands of veterans are seeking treatment). The performances are understated, poignant, and relevant. While the film isn't quintessential, it's a breathe of fresh air to watch a film that examines the plights of veterans who served in Iraq.Rather than focus on the horrors of war with intense battle sequences, this film focuses on the dramatic aspect. While this film examines a unique experience, the movie doesn't provide the catharsis that it deserves. Mainly, that's because there are several problems with the movie. The plot follows a paint-by-numbers stance. By that I mean, "Thank You For Your Service" reminds me of better movies: "The Best Years of Our Lives," "The Deer Hunter," "Coming Home," "Born on the Fourth of July," and "American Sniper." The second act of the movie becomes slightly melodramatic as the characters search for an alternative means to find treatment. While I enjoy the director's punch-in-the-stomach attitude towards the material, he forgets to add insight (SPOILERS: Adam and Aeiti gloss over Waller's suicide). The women need better arcs because the only emotion they provide is sympathy. All these problems fail to undermine a solid naturalistic movie experience.
I hate to say one scene makes a movie but the dogfighting crap was completely uncalled for if your a dog lover you will hate this.
Everyone talks about PTSD these days but this movie shows you the heavy stuff that soldiers have to go through when they get back home from the war. This is a very serious issue that I wish more people would pay attention to. I cried a few different times during the movie. So did my sister. Also I never have understood all the hate for Amy Schumer, but in this movie she is not very good and almost look like she's laughing during some scenes? I don't know. She should stick to comedy though, it took me out of the movie. Hayley Bennett on the other hand was AMAZING!!!! I want to see her in more!Watch this movie!
