Set in Haven Hospital where a certain men's ward is causing more havoc than the whole hospital put together. The formidable Matron's debut gives the patients a chill every time she walks past, with only Reckitt standing up to her. There's a colonel who is a constant nuisance, a bumbling nurse, a romance between Ted York and Nurse Denton, and Bell who wants his bunion removed straight away, so after drinking alcohol, the men decide to remove the bunion themselves!

As Good As It Gets
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
I had known about the Carry On series for years but only started watching it a few days ago. I started with the first one (Carry On Sergeant) and then went to this one. "Carry On Nurse" takes place in a hospital where all manner of mishaps and hi jinx take place. I have no doubt that they fun filming it, especially that whole sequence with the laughing gas.And of course I have to talk about the cast. Shirley Eaton is best remembered as the bikini-clad babe who meets an auric demise in "Goldfinger". Charles Hawtrey got a mention in the Beatles' song "Two of Us". Jill Ireland was married to David McCallum at the time but later got married to Charles Bronson. Kenneth Connor, Kenneth Williams and a number of the other cast members were regulars in the series.
This second film in the series finds the Carry On team on the men's ward of Haven Hospital but unlike the first film, 'Carry on Sergeant', there is no plot to speak of, just a series of amusing events involving the patients and the nurses looking after them. The patients are a varied bunch and include a nuclear physicist, a boxer with a broken hand, a man with a broken leg and another with a bunion. During the film they have amusing interactions with each other and the nurses, however it isn't until close to the end that they all interact in the most amusing scene in the film after a couple of bottles of late night champagne the physicist claims that he is quite capable of operating on the man's bunion but after a slight accident with the nitrous oxide none of them are capable of doing anything! It isn't just the patients who are providing laughs, accident prone Student Nurse Stella Dawson provides plenty too; most notably when she gets her revenge on an awkward patient in a way that I'm surprised the 1959 censors allowed! This film was fun to watch although it didn't contain as many laugh out loud moments as some films in the series it did make me chuckle a few times. The cast did a decent job; the regulars are clearly already comfortable in their roles. One or two of the jokes are a bit 'naughty' but are never as crude as those to be found in the later instalments of the series meaning it is probably okay for younger viewers to watch although some parents might disagree. Watching this it is clear that health care has changed a lot in the last fifty years; no longer does Matron rule the ward with a rod of iron and patients certainly don't smoke in the hospital these days they stand outside the front door to do it!
Carry on nurse is he second carry on film. Like most of the early films in the series it was filmed in black and white. It is a good carry on. It was the most successful film in the uk in 1959. It is quite memorable and helped establish a successful film series which is well known. As it is the second film, the cast are still a new group together. At this stage, Sid James hadn't joined the cast yet. There are many memorable moments just like the first film, carry on sergeant which make the film memorable and a success. It is the first film of joan sims, the bunion on the foot, the colonel and the daffodil, hattie jacques as the chief nurse and the attempt by patients to perform an operation themselves. There are many jokes and strong scenes which make good comedy.
The Matron of Haven Hospital is a fearsome lady, she runs a tight ship and the staff and patients are constantly walking on egg shells. After the admittance of a couple of lively characters, the patients decide enough is enough and start to take things into their own hands.Following on from Carry On Sergeant, this was the second entry into the Carry On franchise, tho some of the humour is borderline bawdy, it's still a long way short of what would become the franchise's trademarks.A number of character peccadilloes keep the film frothy and entertaining, there is budding romances, a hapless nurse, annoying private patient and a whole ream of havoc inducing goings-on. It's well adapted by Norman Hudis, from the play "Ring For Catty", which was written by Patrick Cargill and Jack Searle, and it's directed safely by Gerald Thomas. Who along with his producer, Peter Rogers, would bag themselves in the process a nice on going contract from Pinewood Studios. The film was a big box office success in Britain and even made a splash in America. It's not hard to see why, consistently funny and charmingly simple, Carry On Nurse is as safe as a Victorian built terrace house. Or should that be Hospital? 7.5/10
