Must See Movie...
Fresh and Exciting
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
I wouldn't in all good conscience give it more than a 4 out of 10, because in many ways it is awful, though it's probably better than Apocalypse Pompeii (starring Pete's Highlander cast-mate Adrian Paul).Peter acts with quiet dignity and is very believable in his role. With a decent budget this might have been a Da Vinci Code, mind you that was awful as well. Watch if you have 110 mins to spare in your life.
STONEHENGE APOCALYPSE sees those hacks at the SyFy Channel turn their attentions to the UK with a disaster story set around the titular archaeological site. Turns out there's an ancient, alien machine buried deep beneath the stones, a machine which might well spell disaster for mankind. What this all boils down to is the usual doomsday-disaster stuff, with lots of science types running around and panicking and military types barking gruff orders. Inevitably there are some human villains in this one who need neutralising, although the heroes are on to a good thing with HOLBY CITY actor Peter Wingfield headlining the cast as the crusading doctor.Wingfield is a lot better than this production deserves and to be fair it's pretty bad by genre standards, and about normal for SyFy standards. The Canadian locations look nothing like Britain and the CGI effects are pretty horrendous, but you could do worse as a time filler.
The premise is actually intelligent and exciting, and if the people who took the idea were more talented and had a bigger budget, they could have made a good movie. But they had none of these things and the result is a ridiculous and boring film. It's a classic case of limited talents overreaching. The science often didn't add up, the sets were cheap, the locations were unconvincing, the action scenes were boring, the special effects were mostly poor, and the actors often couldn't get their accents right. Where are the makers of Godzilla when we need them? Their films, while cheap and tacky, were at least fun. But this is a joyless trip in spite of its end-of-the-world stakes. I never believed it for a minute.
I was sceptical of seeing this movie as in all honesty while I do watch them out of curiosity to say I am not a fan of Syfy's output is an understatement. But while it was far from perfect, for Syfy it was actually surprisingly entertaining. Stonehenge Apocalypse does have its faults, some of the script is quite poor with one too many logical lapses, and while I was taken with the idea of the story and it starts off well some of the middle is pedestrian in pace and some scenes do drag on a bit with perhaps too much talk. The pace is uneven, with a middle that does drag, and there are some inconsistencies in the direction. However, the effects for a Syfy are not too bad, not award-worthy but I appreciated that they weren't as crude as some other Syfy projects, while the sets and photography are reasonably good. The characters once you warm to the lead character are at least likable, and the acting is pretty decent which is an achievement considering I have known that particular asset especially to be severely lacking in previous adventures with Syfy. The story is intriguing, and starts and ends well, it's the middle that isn't so good. All in all, not great but it could have been worse. 6/10 Bethany Cox
