Best movie of this year hands down!
The Worst Film Ever
It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
I went into this movie with high hopes that it would become another on my never ending list of favorites. Sadly, I was wrong... I didn't hate it, but I wasn't thrilled with it either. I found my mind wandering and I thought some of the scenes really dragged on. The two redeeming qualities I found in this movie were the use of the character's shadows in filming, and the way Big Fellow dies. The shadows created this mood that kept me more interested than I would have been if they didn't film the movie the way they did. The acting wasn't anything really special and the end of the story was anticlimactic. I think the movie would have been way better if they tried harder to make a better ending. I can't say I have much of a desire to watch this again.
I like watching movies about gang fighting and Mafia. But this movie I feel like director wants to tell us a story about love among gang fighting. But I cannot tell it is a love story or a gang fighting story. It does not have a emphasize side. That's the main cause for me to unlike this movie. But it does have few interesting points to attract me during watching time. 1) At the beginning of this movie, camera focuses on the wheels of those big trucks. These big wheels view and night time street together give us a heavy starting for this movie. 2) The first guy's death, Director does not use any direct killing or bloody shots to say that guy is dead. Only a hat floated on the river. It implies that owner of this hat was dead. 3) Two young lovers playing on the beach. At the starting of this part, it was a beautiful view. It had sunshine and sea. The kid and Nan was happy with each other. But after a conversation about future. They had disagreement. They argued with each other and tried to convince each other. Then the kid walked away from Nan. But as soon as Nan realized how she loved this man, she ran to him. They hugged and kissed just like the argument never happened. 4) While Nan's father and his friend waiting for the elevator, they were having a conversation. But director use a special way to show this. He uses the shadow on the wall as real person to talk. So I can tell they were talking to each other but can't see their face both on the screen. It was a actor and other actor's shadow.
I have to say, I underestimated this movie at first. I didn't think it would be bad, but I also didn't think it would be Citizen Kane. After I watched it though, I was amazed at how immersed I was in it. First off, I really do admire the set and how it had a no-ire feel to it. The shadows accented the world they lived in as their own. I also really liked the chemistry between the Kid (Gary Cooper) and Nan Cooley (Sylvia Sidney). They feel like an actual couple whenever they're on screen and they seem to go through the challenges and trials of an actual relationship. It would have been very easy to make them just in love and happy at that time considering film- making was still relatively new, but they didn't and I really admire how three dimensional they are because of it. If I did have a problem, it would be with the time period and the ending. The time period is at times a bit distracting because it just dates the movie even more and the ending is, dare I say, kind of clichéd with how happy it is. But these are just nitpicks because the era itself can be fascinating to people that were never in it and the so-called cliché wasn't really a cliché yet, so it gets a pass. The glue that holds it together, at least for me, is the relationship between the two leads. And to me, they're worth the watch. See for yourself and give it a shot.
I enjoyed this mob movie because it seemed a little different than other mob movies. In this movie the woman gets accused of murder and gets mad at the kid for not being racketeer like her step dad to make some money whos involved with the mob because he was just working in the circus but was really good with a gun. The woman gets accused of murder and gets put in prison even though she thought and was told that the mob would get her out. While she is in prison The kid comes to visit her and she sees him in this nice fancy coat he tells her he's in the mob now telling her how much he loves it and thinking she would pleased. But she is actually very unhappy about it because she knows something bad could happen to him, and the mob does try to get him. I wanted to see this movie because I saw that it had Gary Cooper in it, I have not seen any of his movies before but I have heard about it him and how great his movies were. And it was pretty good but not what I expected from a Gary Cooper film.
