Good start, but then it gets ruined
Don't Believe the Hype
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
Low budget movie with lots of nudity (not really sexual situations, unless "wrestling" counts in your book as one) and a very easy story to follow. I know some may say that is being nice and I wouldn't even critisize the acting, this is what it is.There is some nice effects (for the toon "monster"). Even without the commentary it was obvious the goal was to appeal to a male audience. You can either take this with a grain of salt and just run with it and have fun (there is an "aware" PSA about nudity in the DVD exras too) or be mad about it. There are worse examples of movies exploiting the actors/actresses. This one was made with good intentions overall. Far away from perfect, still a decent time waster
Four attractive college students -- repressed and bespectacled bookish nerd Megan (an appealing performance by the gorgeous Monique Gabrielle), brassy Roxanne (delightfully played with naughty aplomb by delectable brunette Madison Stone), bossy Terry (lovely Suzanne Agar), and perky Jan (fetching Barbara Dare) -- are hired by the crusty Burt (the always great Dick Miller in fine form) to clean up an old dilapidated house. Roxanne gets possessed by an evil demonic cartoon spirit and terrorizes the other gals. Writer/director Fred Olen Ray doesn't take any of this blithely inane foolishness seriously for a minute: the good-natured dippy tone remains firmly tongue-in-cheek from start to finish, there are loads of cheesy one-liners and self-consciously campy references to other horror films (Miller even watches a clip of himself in "A Bucket of Blood" on television!), the cartoon beast resembles a lecherous version of the Tasmanian Devil, and, naturally, we've got a generous surplus of tasty female nudity (Madison performs a sizzling hot striptease, Monique bares her exquisitely bountiful breasts in front of a mirror, plus both Barbara and Suzanne show their stuff as well). Moreover, a top-rate cast of B-flick regulars have a ball with the goofy material: David Carradine as the sinister Gideon Fisk lurks around like Angus Scrimm's creepy long lost brother, Arte Johnson hams it up as seedy and bothersome neighbor Mr. Hinchlow, and the ever-luscious Michelle Bauer has a sexy bit as Burt's hot to trot wife. Gary Graver's cinematography makes nifty occasional use of tilted camera angles and gives this movie a pretty good look considering the low budget. Chuck Cirino provides a spirited cornball score. An absolute riot.
`Evil Toons' is a rather entertaining movie with fair to average acting, very attractive women running around with no clothes on, a not-too-bad of a plot, a very horney cartoon character with an extra long tongue, and plenty of laughable elements that make B movies so much fun. The movie isn't presented as a serious drama or even a serious comedy and one gets the impression that all the recognizable actors in it knew this in advance. After all, I hope they read the script prior to shooting. The movie begins with the typical horror genre; Four girls are hired to stay and clean a very large, but abandoned house. While cleaning, one of them finds a creepy looking book covered in real skin that contains pornographic images of cartoons and is written entirely in Latin. And wouldn't you know it, the geeky girl knows just enough Latin to get them all into trouble. As with any movie that ends up on the B listing, there could have been many improvements that would have made this movie better - but too late now - I doubt any of the actors will do a sequel. In short, don't expect too much more than a lot of good laughs accompanied by the shaking of your head. The movie is well worth the $5 rental fee.
A bizarre 'B' movie offering from the evergreen Fred Olen Ray. Here we have a horror/tits n'ass movie, combining live action with animation, as seen in 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' (1988).The story has four girls employed as cleaners (!!) staying in a spooky old house for the weekend to tidy things up for the new owners. Three of them are good-time girls with 'big' hair and cut-off denim shorts - the foursome made up by the obligatory bespectacled square, played by soft-core porn actress Monique Gabrielle. The film is low-brow to say the least, but its quite well-made with a reasonable dose of entertainment value. There are lots of breasts on display, particularly Monique's which are quite fantastic, and the film has a self-mocking tone which helps maintain the sense of fun - one girl asks - "Why do these things always have to start with young beautiful co-eds going into the basement?"David Carradine tries to give the film a star name, but he wanders aimlessly around as some bloke from years ago who got involved with a cursed book, which the girls then find. This unleashes a sexually frustrated cartoon demon which proceeds to stalk the female flesh on display.60's Corman stalwart Dick Miller puts in an appearance, and proceedings meander along until the script gives up the ghost. For 'B' movie fans 'Evil Toons' has a surprisingly lot to offer. Production values are good and everything gives the impression of having been made by people whose passion for their work is strong.BEST SCENE - Roxanne's strip dance is good, but Megan's topless scene in front of the mirror is out of the top drawer.
