Anja and five friends join anthroplogy student, Dace, on a journey to study a remote, ancient rock painting. Their excitement vanishes when Mel becomes delirious after skinny-dipping in the waterhole. Feverish, bleeding, confused, she physically and mentally regresses to a vicious predatory state. Mel has gone primal. Mel’s lover and friends realise they are the prey as she savagely hunts them down. Before they can escape another one of them starts to regress, posing a hideous choice; kill their friends or be killed by them. Their only hope of survival is through a cave, where Anja learns too late the meaning of the ancient rock art they came to study.

Absolutely the worst movie.
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
This had good written all over it and then the characters started to interact. Unfortunately these morons had to speak and ruin the movie. First there is the "Sensitive" guy. God, I hate Sensitive Guy. The "Group of Friends" movie genre is a hit or miss proposition. This one swung and missed, not because of the story or the horror effects and not even the acting itself, no, it lost its way simply because of dialogue and character. Take for instance the "Sensitive Guy". This moron was so far out of touch with reality that it made me think he was some Hollywood stereotype of a chick. Trust me, listen to this guy when the crap hits the fan and a decision has to be made. Sure, sensitive people will say that he was just heartbroken, therefor his decisions were off. Bullcrap! He goes from delusional to self righteous in zero point five seconds. I don't know which one was worse. Fightine, bickering, back stabbing and overly sensitive adults. The ultimate failure of a group movie. I've never understood the whole idea of packing five or six people in an SUV and then have them fight for the better part of an hour. It pisses me off. I understand human nature and people packed into an SUV for hours, yeah, someone is going to get cranky and some bickering will ensue. But petty squabbling the entire movie? Yuck. If it weren't for the characters I would have put this in the 7 range for horror and bloodshed.
THis is not bad for a low budget horror flick. Acting is great - very natural - apart from that one guy and the lead actress is particularly good. Some great eye-candy for all genders/orientations actually!! The plot is interesting and the direction and camera work is great, also has good soundtrack that works well. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous - such a luscious, atmospheric location. Occasionally the movie slipped a little and became unintentionally humorous, other times the humour was deliberate - very Australian in it's flavour - and that worked well. It was a bit uneven I guess, but there was enough of the good quality to see it through some of the roughness. I definitely think this is a Director to keep an eye on - especially if given a decent budget - he achieved wonders with the limits he had. The only real downside is the ending - as many have pointed out which gets away from the director a bit and becomes fairly silly. But that's OK b/c even then that's kinda fun (if uncomfortable fun) anyway. It's nowhere near the level of movies like The Descent or Splinter (two of my favourites) but it's definitely one of the better budget horror flicks and worth a lot more than it's current rating (hence my ranking it slightly higher than I actually think it deserves). I see quite a lot of whining about the useless Chad character but to me that's actually a sign of good writing and acting. They've written a character into the movie who is a useless coward and we, the audience are thoroughly convinced by the actor and disgusted with him. This is GOOD not BAD. And it's why the movie works despite it's flaws - there is quality here - it's just inconsistent. But mostly the movie has heart - from all involved there is a feeling of commitment and involvement. They put in 100% which is not that common with the low budget end of the industry - actually not even in the higher budget ends. I think that's often what makes the difference between rubbish and worth seeing for me.Oh and the final scene with it's one word punchline cracked me up. I loved it!!! My favourite part of the movie. (still chuckling actually!!)If you're looking for snooty arty horror movies with some kind of deep & meaningful message or for the next big budget "Shining" go elsewhere. But if you just want to watch a well made, quality, low budget fun flick, this is your answer.PS A note to that other reviewer (you know who you are), making (racist) judgments about Australian's in general based on a character in some obscure low budget horror flick really only demonstrates how stupid YOU are and not how "cowardly" Australians are. OH and no-one "took our guns away" why would you think that? Do you even KNOW where Australia is?
The Horror genre, as underrated as it might be, has several sub-genres that us Horror freaks know how to recognize and differentiate. "Primal" is a well made and nicely assembled combination of the virus/plague sub genre (like Cabin Fever) and various werewolves films. It uses just the right amount of motives and aspects of each of these sub-genres, and remains realistic and scary enough to be very enjoyable as a Horror film. The screenplay is good, with a clever script (and some very amusing dialogues giving us a nice, if short, occasional comic relief), the characters are reasonably realistic, and the make-up/effects department sure has done its homework.I must say the ending lacked, as is the case with many Horror films. "Primal" could have used a more elaborate one, better explaining the weird occurrences of the final 15 minutes so they don't appear to be coming out of the blue and almost forced. All in all, "Primal" isn't a masterpiece, but is a good and enjoyable film, and I'd recommend it to any Horror fan.
A group of young men and women travel to the Outback to study an ancient cave painting and while camping near it find themselves struggling to combat a lethal virus which turns some into primal psychotics. But that isn't all. However, rather than spoil the mystery or suspense I will just say that this film had some good elements and some weak ones as well. First, I thought it had some very good special effects. At least as far as the makeup and gore was concerned. But the CGI for some of the action scenes was kind of elementary and disappointing. It boasts plenty of running, screaming and fighting and a few good surprises as well. But the characters all seemed rather hollow and one-dimensional. In short, if a person likes a splatter film with plenty of action and CGI then then they might really enjoy this movie. Personally, I didn't think it was that bad. But I didn't think it was that good either.
