Why so much hype?
Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
I stumbled upon "The Recall" by sheer luck. I picked it up, saw who was in it and read the synopsis. Right, well this was not going to be a spectacular in Hollywood cinema, for sure. But still, I decided to sit down and watch the movie, as Wesley Snipes do have some good enough movies every now and then."The Recall" turned out to be fair enough entertainment, but hardly brought anything new or revolutionary to the alien visitor genre.I will say that the movie certainly had good special effects and CGI. However, it was plagued by an overly generic storyline, which sort of slowly drained the enjoyment away in small fragments. It should also be said that they had some good acting in the movie, and the cast definitely lived up to performing adequately in bringing their characters to life on the screen. Now, the movie certainly did have some flaws, of course. One of the biggest and most annoying was how very convenient the alien ship just happened to have an easily accessed passage that allowed for Charlie to roam about the ship. All in all, "The Recall" is adequately entertaining for a single viewing. Just don't expect anything spectacular here and you will not be too disappointed.
Five friends decide to take a vacation at a remote lake house hoping to have lots of carefree fun. However, the fun times they have become rather limited after they are stalked by a seemingly disturbed loner and the imminent threat of an alien attack...The Recall or First Recall as it is otherwise known is not a very good film, but it's perhaps the director who should shoulder some of the blame for the film's failings. It's a nonsensical film with a rather silly plot yet the director seems to play the material pretty much straight making the film feel heavy and dull -it's almost like he believed in his own nonsense which gives the film no sense of irony. Snipes is clearly the make or break aspect in this film and with a different director and writer he may have been up to the task, but in this film he simply makes no real impression at all; the serious tone really works against him here. On the other hand perhaps his recent legal troubles have meant that he isn't quite the bankable star that he once was and maybe he now has to 'get work where he can.' If that's the case maybe he knew that this was a bad film and maybe he didn't care about putting in a good performance and just decided to phone it in. Who knows?Anyway, after a really dull first hour the film becomes a little more interesting when the kids get abducted by the aliens (there's a sense of intrigue in trying to discover what they're doing to the earthlings up there). The end result is rather disappointing when you learn that their time on the ship consists of 3 of them having a bath, whilst one of them is suspended on god knows what and the other is able to freely roam round the ship and find all of his friends. The only interesting part of this film is when Charlie speaks to what he believes to be his dead girlfriend only it isn't his dead girlfriend speaking it is in fact the aliens merely manipulating him. Still I'll give the film some credit for trying to inject some depth to at least one of the characters. There was quite a serious flaw with this film and that relates to how Kara ended up on the ship in the first place? The other 4 were clearly abducted, but Kara was killed before the abduction took place so how did she end up there? The finale goes a bit weird where it seems to become a cross between Close Encounters and the Fantastic Four - they all seem to have varying powers after their alien encounter (better hearing, healing powers, mind control and so on), but the cynic in me seemed to think that merely existed both as a cool twist and as a way to wrap the film up.Perhaps one of the biggest strengths with this film is in the numerous ways it can be interpreted; was Snipes crazy and was this all his fantasy? Was the whole thing a dream? The ending could have suggested that there was a natural storm coming and that all of the alien stuff was made up. Truth be told I really didn't know and had the film been more fun I really couldn't have cared. However, despite it turning out to be something of a mild curiosity piece by the end it is far too dull and boring for me to be able to recommend it.
LOL, one of them is, I kid you not, is that this film is: "A 'Master Class' in filmmaking."Oh, ok.There is some good monitoring of upshilling reviews that use tech like that applied to amazon with 'fakespot." Mainstream films like last years "Mrs Sloan" show lots of fake up rating reviewing, but these low budget ones can be gold mines of absurdly laughable ones!
Let me start with congratulating Mr. Borelli on his impressive body of work as an illustrator and all-around creative soul. I assume, this is his directorial debut and that he co-wrote the script as well. Right, I jumped on this flick in good, honest faith. Wesley was in it, innit? So, off it goes... it's actually another teenagers-in-trouble film and it appears to be made for television. I can't imagine this on cinema screen, just can't. For the better part of the movie, it's actually well shot. Some of the FX is solid, if not slightly entertaining. The story-line, yeah I could go with it. But the execution of it is far from satisfying. The young people who appear to be the actors, they aren't really 'directed'. As in, the director/cinematographer/editor seems oblivious at the atrocious performance developing in front of our eyes, and makes no attempt to rectify or justify it any time sooner. Actually, the last fifteen minute or so plays out like an amateur theater play. The ending justifies the means. I could not have ended this movie better. I would be really miffed if this film ended in any other way. When it did, a synapse fired-off: -but Wesley was in it (sniff)... /The super-ego retorted: -Not enough my son, not enough. P.S. I took off another star for the 'brilliant' ending.
