Absolutely Fantastic
A brilliant film that helped define a genre
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
This is pretty much a copy of The Roommate with Leighton Meester; rich girl with mental issues moves to a new town and attaches themselves to a person, eventually ruins a relationship, is obsessive, has no identity, bla bla bla. My thing is just- if you're gonna rip another movie off, why not rip a good movie off? And Bella Thorne. Man. Where do I begin? It's basically like casting a high profile stripper to play a 17 year old. Did Tyler Smiths rich family member produce the film and that's what got him a lead role? There's so many things wrong with this film, it's casting, it's execution, the entire story line.
Tyler (Taylor John Smith) is deeply in love with new girl Ali (Halston Sage). He's even willing to do yoga for her. It's the last week of the summer and they go to a friend's party. They encounter Ali's sleazy ex Chase from San Francisco. Tyler has a fight with Ali and leaves the party with unknown girl Holly (Bella Thorne). Tyler has a short drug filled sexual escapade. Afterward, he makes up with Ali but is shocked to find Holly attending their school. This one hits all the expected tropes and I actually was hoping for a bunny boil. Tyler is a pathetic unappealing dumb character. The only good aspect is the casting of Sage and Thorne. Sage is a solid good girl and Thorne is perfect as hot crazy. I don't think Thorne can really play the innocent good girl at this point. Using Tyler as the point of view is not compelling. There is no rooting interest in him. He almost redeems himself confessing to Lydia at the hospital but stupid writing immediately takes it all back. He talks face to face with Ali and fails utterly to warn her against Holly. There are so many laughable moments in the third act. It's derivative and unappealing at first and then it devolves into a bad thriller. The actresses are good although the male lead is saddled with a bad role.
This movie is clichéd, I'll admit that, but it's also quite good! I'm into true crime, so I know about the lengths that an obsessed person will go to in order to be with the person they're obsessed with! Bella Thorne is great at playing a psychopath in the vein of Alex Forrest, and actually gives Glenn Close a run for her money! Now, I haven't seen "Fatal Attraction", and from what I've heard of it, I don't think I want to, because of , well, the bunny! That's all I have to say!
As I watched this movie, I started thinking, this plot looks familiar. It was "Swim Fan" all over again but not nearly as good, just a slightly different premise. SPOILERSMaybe I've seen too many crime shows, but as I was watching, I also thought the plot holes were pretty big. The guy could get a restraining order against the crazy girl, he had a phone record for proof showing her escalation and they could just look at her phone and her house to see just how crazy she was. Go watch "Death Note" on Netflix instead.
